Round about Himalchuli - Manaslu, crossing Larkya La, 5200m

Round about Manaslu trek is a rewarding trek through a spectacular narrow gorge of the Buri Gandaki River valley. In the lower elevations the trail passes through Gurung villages, some located high up on steep ledges. In the upper reaches, once we enter beyond the principal chain of the Himalaya, we trek through villages of another Bhotia ethnic group, the Larke Bhote. This is a region of unmistakably Tibetan culture, with large chortens typically marking gateways to villages. Here the trail leads virtually beneath the vertical walls of Himalchuli (7895m) and Manaslu massif, with the Manaslu glacier nearly touching Sama Gaon, one of the last villages above timberline. From here we continue to ascend, with the summit of Manaslu (8154m/26,788ft) seemingly within arm's length, to the crest and over the 5200m Larkya La. Beyond the pass we descend another deep gorge, a tributary of Marsyangdi River, which we'll ultimately follow back down to the trailhead.
